La Savonnière is located in the lovely, historic village of Esparros surrounded by stone cottages. In the 18th century, The Baronnie of Esparros included 4 parishes: Arrodets, Labastide, Laborde and of course, Esparros. These villages and several others are encompassed within the beautiful Baronnies Valley.
Our home is an "L-shaped" building. The property provides a lot of privacy yet is conveniently within the village. We are located centrally in town. In the picture to the left, the steeple of the church can be seen on the left and the building just beyond the church houses the Épicerie (grocery store) and the Marie's Office. Just beyond, the library (Very near the house in red on the left side of the picture) is Le Relais, the local restaurant and bar that serves very good local cuisine. The Pyrenean Singers, who specialize in reviving old Pyrenees chants and songs are centered in Esparros and they can be regularly heard practicing in our local school.

In the foreground (Shown in the painting by the famous French painter André Lac and not visible in the upper left picture) is the stream L'Aroudet that flows through Esparros. We have seen several trout fisherman just beyond the Marie's office fishing. Also, the source of this stream can be found across the street from La Savonnière near the well preserved Moulin that now serves as a vacation home. Up the street from the Moulin and a short walk from La Savonnière is the Gouffre d'Esparros, containing famous crystalline caves, which is open to the public.

From La Savonnière, one can easily hear Esparros' church bells ring, and in like manner, one can also hear the sonorous knelling of the neighboring churches, which is particularly delightful at Noon and 7 PM when the bells call out to the farmers to return home for their meals. (Note: For those who may be concerned, the church bells do not ring between 9 PM and 8 AM.)
The film site for the internationally acclaimed film Le Pacte de Loup (Brotherhood of the Wolves) can be seen from our front door, located above the waterfall in Esparros. This film is recognized as a major cinematic accomplishment and has been translated / dubbed into English. Many visitors come to Esparros just to visit the film site. One of the major hikes in the area goes right through the locations where the film was made. We have this film for those who may wish to see it.

La Savonnière
"Old World Charm" and Breathtaking Views
The charm of La Savonnière is not limited to the house, its wooden beamed ceilings, stone entryway or to the newly terraced and landscaped backyard. The house is situated in the eastern end of the Baronnies (Les Baronnies) and it is one of the most stunning valleys in this region.
With the high Pyrénées forming the backdrop for the fantastic pastoral views of the valley, one cannot help but be inspired by the visual contrasts. We are 6 miles from Pic du Midi, one of the highest peaks in the French Pyrénées and 30+ minutes from many of the local ski slopes. Of the many ski resorts around us, you can ski Peyragudes where the James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies was filmed. Just step out into the Pyrenees mountains and take one of the many spectacular walks or bicycle paths. Many designated trails are virtually outside our front door. Within walking distance of La Savonnière is a trout farm and one can buy fresh trout locally or you can try your luck trout fishing in the stream that passes through our village of Esparros (License required). For water enthusiasts, there are numerous white water rivers to canoe, raft or kayak. Numerous schools and outdoor adventure shops provide guided outdoor activities, including mountaineering, rock climbing, parasailing, canyoning, hot air ballooning, horse back riding and mountain biking. Tennis and boules courts and golf courses are nearby. There is also a local English speaking (hiking and walking) guides who know the area well and who can be hired to show you the area. The valleys and the mountains are crisscrossed with interesting and scenic hiking trails, providing ample opportunity to enjoy nature. For the more adventurous, one can hike to see remote mountain lakes, towering cirques (such as the famous Cirque de Gavarnie) and the highest peaks. ...Or you can relax in La Savonnière's beautifully landscaped, private, rear terraced gardens or sit on our front patio that overlooks verdant green fields and watch the antics of the white stallions and mares.

Snow capped Pic du Midi in the French Pyrénées is 6 miles from La Savonnière.
The Pyrénées mountains divides France from Spain and is approximately 450 km long, stretching from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. In the Hautes-Pyrénées, the border is a high ridge of peaks, reaching heights over 10,000 feet. The Pyrénées divide the arid, sun parched landscape of Northern Spain from the green and fertile hillsides of Southern France.
The beautiful Les Baronnies Valley, where La Savonnière is situated, in contrast to the Pyrénées which it parallels, is a pastoral area that is rich in diversified plant and animal life. Rare mountain flowers, a profusion of birds, large and small animals and permanent glaciers can be seen from La Savonnière.
The food in the region is second to none - enjoy truffles, foie gras, confit, pâtés, hams, sanglier, duck, lamb, honey, jams, pastries and breads, and of course, cheeses and wines.
There are numerous festivals, concerts and cultural events in the area, all local to La Savonnière.
There is a local airport where you can hire a plane and pilot to take you for a tour of the Baronnies and the Pyrenees.
On the left is an "Un-zoomed" view from La Savonnière's front door of our neighbors white horses.
